Swedish Massage

A Swedish Massage is a type of massage using a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart.

How does it work?

A Swedish Massage increases oxygen flow in the blood, releases toxins from the muscles and shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid and metabolic wastes. It increases circulation and stretches ligaments and tendons, keeping them supple and pliable. A Swedish Massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves at the same time. All this is accomplished by using several different techniques of hand massage.

What type of techniques are used?

  • Effleurage – This technique consists of long, gliding strokes from the neck down to the base of the spine or from the shoulder down to the fingertips. All strokes are made toward the heart to aid in blood and lymphatic flow. This is accomplished through movements of the whole hand or the thumbs.
  • Petrissage – This massage technique involves gently lifting muscles up and away from the bones, then rolling and squeezing them with a gentle pressure. This technique is meant to increase circulation by clearing out toxins from muscle and nerve tissue.
  • Friction – This is the most penetrating of the strokes during a Swedish Massage. It consists of deep circular movements made with the thumbs or fingertips. Deep, circular movement is applied near joints and bony areas such as the side of the spine. This friction breaks down adhesions and contributes to more flexible muscles and joints.
  • Tapotement – Tapotement consists of a series of briskly applied movements that use the hands alternately to strike or tap the muscles for an invigorating effect. This stroke has many variations such as using the edge of the hand, the tips of the fingers or the closed fist. It releases tension and cramping from muscles.
  • Vibration or Shaking – This consists of pressing hands on the back or limbs and rapidly shaking for a few seconds. This technique boosts circulation and is particularly helpful for lower back pain.

Hot Stone Therapy can provide relief from muscular aches, pains, sprains, strains, poor circulation, rheumatic and arthritic conditions, fibromyalgia, back pain, stress, anxiety and tension.

What kinds of stones are used?

Stones of varying shapes that have been naturally smoothed by a river are used. Some stones are heated, and some are left cool. Larger stones are used along the spine, and smaller stones are placed on other parts of the body. For facials, crystals such as quartz and semi-precious stones are used.

How do the stones work?

Stones are heated to a comfortable, warm temperature and placed on the back along the spine. Other stones massage the arms, legs and head. The heat from the stones helps increase the heart rate and regulates blood flow. It helps rid the muscles of toxic waste products which build up from stress. Stiff joints benefit from the penetrating heat, and Hot Stone Therapy also helps with stress and skin disorders. Sometimes cold stones are applied to further stimulate blood circulation.
